Portland has a ton of things to be proud about: good food, great coffee, acres of parks, the amazing climate… climate for small businesses, that is! This is our third year participating in the Little Boxes play & win Black Friday (and Saturday) shopping event, which showcases the incredible spectrum of locally owned shops around town. This year there are over 90 ways to win, and those geniuses built a free phone app to make multiple entries (and unlocking discounts) even easier. Check out the map and plan your route; this is a great opportunity to visit new shops, your old favorites across town, or the one you always spy on after hours; and while you’re having so much fun about it you can be GETTING ALL YOUR HOLIDAY SHOPPING DONE! We’ll be open from 10-7 both days, and in case all of that wasn’t a sweet enough deal, we’ll have hot cider and champagne.
If you can manage to make it to Mississippi Avenue on Saturday, stick around for this benefit auction that’s been put together for Cristine Bowman, a longtime employee of the wonderful shop Noun, who’s been battling cancer. This is sad news to post, but it does make our hearts swell with joy to see the community pulling together this way. A silent auction and DJ set will be happening at Mississippi Studios from 7-9 pm (the amazing benefit concert with Typhoon is sold out!), so stop by, have a beverage, and make some bids for a very worthwhile cause. Here’s a list of contributors to the auction…

Oh happiness and how the world seems to just line up perfectly sometimes and that’s how I feel about collaborating with my dear and very talented friend Laurie Cinotto! I’m so happy to be presenting her trunk show La La Laurie at Flutter on Saturday April 4th. Laurie and I are friends from those early days in Seattle (can you believe 15 years ago!). We met working at our wonderful neighborhood flower shop on Capital Hill. Being both from the midwest me from Kansas and she from Iowa, we instantly had a midwest connection along with a few other similarities, like our metal head banging youth (she’s going to kill me for saying that!) She’s always been an inspiration to me with her art, flowers, crafts, her amazing eye for junk, design & display talents, dedication to those kitties and her sweet and inspiring outlook on life.
Laurie Cinotto of La La Laurie will be revealing a fanciful collection of corsages, boutonnieres and bouquets. Her spring collection is hand crafted using imported papers and ribbons, buttons and vintage notions. It’s lively and bright, filled with bunnies and birds, feathers and flowers. The corsages and boutonnieres are for every day wear and dress up occasions. The bouquets can accent your home, or be carried by a bride.
Laurie Cinotto is an artist, turned florist, turned artist again. She enjoys creating delicate things for you to wear, and objects to dress your home. Even though she’s not a florist anymore, she still finds inspiration in the glorious colors and textures found in flowers. She has a fondness for old things , and loves incorporating vintage bits into her work.
FLUTTER SOIREE AND URCHIN DEBUT
THURSDAY DECEMBER 11th @ 5pm
Sonia of Urchin has sent me some photos and a manifesto to share with the blog readers. She makes amazing dresses, headbands, necklaces, bracelets and art pieces of varying size and description. Her dresses are exquisitely tailored and can be altered to suit your exact size and shape. Her use of found objects and reconstructed vintage multimedia bits are testament to her endless creativity!
Here is her manifesto:
Urchin is a combination of old and new.
Vintage garments, accessories and ephemera undone, re-done, and as found.
It’s a mixture of the beautiful, delicate and intricate, with the crusty, rusty, and hopefully not too musty. It marries my passions: Vintage, apparel design, and scavenging/re-using.
The re-done garments are all hand draped and dress form fitted, the jewelry and feather pieces are designed on a dress form as well, so their proportions and esthetics are form tailored.
I hope you find some things you really enjoy.
It’s that time again…a Flutter Party! Just in time to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season, but we have much more to celebrate too. I am pleased to announce and unveil our exiting, new endeavors at Flutter. The first is Sonia Kasparian, our new clothing designer debuting her clothing and accessories line, Urchin. Sonia is a long time Portland artist. Check out her recent show at Butters Gallery. Her visions and creations will be a lovely addition to the store and the perfect compliment to the very talented Julia of Frocky Jack Morgan. I am so thrilled and honored to have 2 amazing designers/artists at Flutter.
The next exiting news, which you may have been reading about on our blog, is the new home accessories line being developed and designed by Susan Hashem and Sari Gunderson. You’ve seen some of Susan’s work in the shop already, but these 2 have teamed up to make the most intoxicating, amazing pillows and curtain panels. Silk Dupioni in luscious magentas, teal blues and chocolate, silk screened with peacock feathers, pagodas and chrysanthemums that are then sewn beautifully into drapes and pillows. My head is spinning just thinking about these beautiful creations at Flutter. The best news is you can custom order your own!
Hail Mary!! Another long time Portland artist Mary Tapogna will be gracing our Flutter blue walls with her spakling mosaic crosses. What an amazing shrine it will be and so perfect for Flutter.
To further your Flutter experience with visual treats, our holiday ornaments have arrived and turned the back wall cabinet into a spakling feast for the eyes! Oh and the Flutter holiday windows….Sara and Casea have been sketching the most beautiful Madonnas all lined in gold glitter, perched in the window and blessing those passing by.
It’s all so exciting. If all of this is not enough…Frocky Jack Morgan models, Swing Papillon and Peach champagne. I think we will be seeing you on Thursday!
